From our hands to your heart — and this week, let’s take a peek through a judge’s eyes!
As a committee member for the Coastal Bend Quilt & Needlework Guild’s 2027 show, “Let the Good Times Roll,” I get asked one question more than almost anything else: “What are the judges actually looking for?”
If you imagine judges walking down the aisles with white gloves and a giant red pen looking for mistakes, let me stop you right there! Judges aren’t looking for reasons to dock points—they walk into the room hoping to be wowed. They want to fall in love with your work!
So, let’s clear up the mystery and talk about what gives a quilt that extra little spark on judging day—and why you shouldn’t let fear keep your work in the closet.
1. Good Workmanship Is Great—But “Wow” Is in the Vibe
Yes, judges check the basics: points that line up, flat seams, even stitching, and a quilt that hangs nice and square without curling up at the edges. But perfection isn’t the whole goal.
The Wow Factor: What really stops a judge in their tracks is how everything comes together. When crisp piecing meets a fun color choice or a creative pattern, the quilt comes alive. A quilt with a small, honest little imperfection and a big, creative personality will almost always beat out a technically “perfect” quilt that feels a bit plain.
2. Binding Gets a Lot of Love (Seriously!)
Binding is usually one of the very first things a judge touches. Why? Because it’s the frame around all your hard work! They look for flat, square corners, even width, and clean stitching on both sides.
The Wow Factor: When a binding is done well, it just makes the whole quilt pop. A cute contrasting edge or a sharp mitered corner gives that neat, finished look. If binding isn’t your favorite thing to sew, practicing on a placemat or mini-quilt beforehand—or having it finished up at the shop—can make a huge difference!
3. The Quilting Should “Talk” to the Piecing
One of the biggest score differences isn’t how hard the quilting pattern was—it’s whether the quilting actually fits the top! A super heavy pattern can easily swallow up delicate piecing, while plain piecing might look a little empty without the right thread design to fill it out.
The Wow Factor: The magic happens when the quilting design brings out the best in your piecing. When custom lines highlight your blocks or a gorgeous thread color adds texture, it just feels intentional. This is my favorite chat to have with clients at the studio—helping you figure out whether your top wants a simple edge-to-edge pattern or something custom is half the fun!
4. Here’s the Real Secret: Judges Want You to Win
The biggest thing I tell first-time entrants is that judging is meant to help you grow, not make you feel bad! Guild shows give you written feedback so you walk away with real, helpful tips for your next project.
Every single person I’ve talked out of their nervousness ended up telling me afterward, “I wish I’d entered years ago!” It’s not a scary test—it’s a room full of fellow quilters who love this craft just as much as you do.
